Boyfriends 'n Hogs

Fun fact about my boyfriend: he is probably the most laid back guy in the entire world. Kind, courteous, good with my family and not even a hint of jealousy.


Until he met Lester.


Alexander and Lester have a tenuous relationship at best. While Lester sleeps pretty much all day every day as soon as Alexander he magically wakes up. Not only does he wake up in the middle of the day, he proceeds to knock down his water bottle, bang his ceramic food bowl against the tank walls and WORST of all, smear his poop on the glass. Yup. My wonderfully docile hedgehog dirties the walls of his home as soon as my boyfriend comes over. And to top it all off, my wonderfully laid back boyfriend gets slightly territorial offended. Because apparently Lester is a threat of some sort (or maybe he just thinks the whole poop thing is rude). Clearly the two do not get along.

That being said this picture gives me hope. If you look really close you can see my two 'boys' getting along. I think, given another semester, these two will become best friends. Right?

Hedgehogs 101

Here are some things to know about hedgehogs.

1. Hedgehogs are not related to porcupines. They are actually most closely related to the mole.
2. Hedgehogs are nocturnal.
3. Hedgehogs do not "throw" their quills, meaning that if you are pricked by a quill it does not detach itself from the little hedgies body. Instead that have two muscles, one on either side of their body, that they use to "stand up" their quills when they are frightened.

The First Hog

I suppose I could clarify. This is actually a blog about a dog and hedgehog. The puppy is yet to be named (right now she's Nugz) and the hedgehog is named Lester Bangs! They're still learning to get along. Here's a pic of Lester.
